Samsung's VR headset leaks, launch rumored to take place in September

Gear VR photo shows Oculus Rift-inspired design of Samsung headset

A photograph of Samsung's upcoming virtual reality headset has leaked. The image of the headset, codenamed "Project Moonlight" but appearing in a previous leak under the "Gear VR" name, appears to depict a device which combines aspects of the Oculus Rift design with that of Google Cardboard, into a VR headset which reuses an existing smartphone.

The photograph received by The Verge clearly shows lenses inside the main headset, similar in appearance to the Rift, along with elastic that wraps around the sides and over the top of the wearer's head. A removable plastic panel with strategically-placed holes holds a smartphone in place, while also allowing the device's camera and other possible sensors to remain exposed. A Micro USB connection is also visible in the image, suggesting the headset may have some electronics on board, rather than being a passive smartphone holder.

According to the report, the headset will be making an official appearance at its Unpacked event in early September, and may appear next to the expected Galaxy Note 4.
