Meta Watch starts preorders for Meta M1 smartwatch, ships September

updated 08:51 pm EDT, Fri August 8, 2014

Repeatedly-delayed Meta M1 soon to reach customer hands

Meta Watch has finally put the Meta M1 smartwatch up for preorder, after several delays. The long-in-development smartwatch, designed by Frank Nuovo and his Nuovo design studio, is said to start shipping this September, with the eight different finishes of the device ranging in price starting from $249, rising upward to $449.

Housed in a stainless steel case with steel or ballistic nylon lugs, the Meta M1 has a 1.3-inch128x128-resolution Memory Pixel LCD and a total of six buttons, reports BGR. Connecting over Bluetooth 4.0 to an Android or iOS device, it can display smartphone notifications, and can customize the screen using its companion app, and has a claimed battery life between five and seven days. Weighing between 303 grams (10.7oz) and 411 grams (14.5oz) depending on finish, it is waterproof to 3ATM, and is available with stainless steel, leather, and natural rubber watch bands.

The Meta M1 has an uphill battle for acceptance, bearing in mind its competition. Pebble, the nearest to the Meta M1 in terms of design and functionality, has already achieved a foothold in the smartwatch market, and though the similar-design Pebble Steel costs the same as the base model Meta M1, it does offer cheaper plastic options for $150. It also has to contend with a brace of other smartwatches which potentially provide more functionality than notifications, such as the Android Wear-based Moto 360 and the LG G Watch.
