Users tuning in during primetime hours
ABC News has published new statistics showing that its Apple TV app is enjoying early popularity. During its first 30 days, the app is said to have registered about 50 percent more live video access than ABC's desktop and mobile services combined. Moreover, viewers are said to spend 65 percent more time per session on the Apple TV than on ABC's website.
Peak usage of the app typically hits around 9PM Eastern time. That may be significant, since that's within primetime hours in both the Eastern and Central timezones, suggesting that some people are choosing the Apple TV over cable and satellite options. The most intense activity came on July 17th, when people tuned in for live coverage of the Malaysia Airlines flight shot down over the Ukraine.
ABC is gradually adding more local video to the app. Current cities include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh, Fresno, and Milwaukee; Albuquerque, Boston, and Honolulu will be added in the near future.
