Sony ending e-book reader hardware production, line ends with PRS-T3

updated 03:15 pm EDT, Tue August 5, 2014

Users of Sony's products may be left out in the cold with closure of division

Sony has not only exited the e-book market, but it is departing the e-book reader manufacturing business as well. In a brief statement, the company said that it does not have plans "to develop a successor Reader model at this time." Sales for Sony's PRS-T3 will continue only as long as existing stock holds out. It is unknown what venues users will have for support when supplies run dry.

Sony's decision to shutter its own e-book store was greeted by disdain by users, forcing many of the company's older devices into obsolescence. Older versions of Sony's devices will still be able to use non-DRM protected media, even after the closure of the Sony store. Presumably, Kobo access will continue for the newer devices, but it is unlikely that any bug or security fixes will be forthcoming.

US users were directed to migrate in May. European readers completed transitioning in June. Japanese owners of Sony's device still have access to the Sony Store for e-book purchasing, but for how long is unknown.
