Leak claims redesigned home buttons for 4.7-, 5.5-inch iPhones

updated 12:55 pm EDT, Fri August 1, 2014

Suggests significantly different internal layouts

Photos obtained by a French site show what are claimed to be home buttons and connected flex cables for Apple's 4.7- and 5.5-inch iPhones, sometimes dubbed the iPhone 6 and iPhone Air, respectively. Both differ not only from the iPhone 5s, but each other, with the 4.7-inch phone for instance having a straight cable, and the 5.5-inch device having a slightly bent one. The buttons themselves are also visibly different. Significantly, identification numbers appear to match previous leaks and other parts from Apple.

Another part shown is an induction flex cable for the 4.7-inch iPhone. A noticeable element is the absence of a photo sensor, something attached to an equivalent cable in the iPhone 5s.

The parts may add to evidence that the new iPhones are substantial redesigns in more than just size. Many specifications are still ambiguous, but it's generally believed that the phones will have faster processors, more RAM, and better cameras. They may also incorporate technologies like 802.11ac Wi-Fi and NFC; the 5.5-inch phone may even have up to 128GB of storage. Sapphire display covers have been rumored, but sources are still in conflict.
