Fired Nokia workers protest Microsoft 'violent' layoffs in China

Crowd of over 500 protest 'disrespectful' layoffs, calls acquisition hostile

Chinese Nokia employees staged a protest today, decrying mass layoffs coming as a result of the company's acquisition by Microsoft. Protestors decried "Microsoft's hostile takeover" of the company, and called the layoffs to come "violent" and disrespectful for over five hours. The protesters claim that they will be giving demands to Microsoft later this afternoon.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted when disclosing the layoffs that the vast majority of them would come from newly-acquired Nokia. Of the 18,000 layoffs needed, 12,500 will come from Nokia through "synergies and strategic alignment of the Nokia Devices and Services business acquired by Microsoft on April 25."

There doesn't appear to be any malevolence behind the layoffs, however victims of the firings were told in a mass-list posted on the company's website. Allegedly, severance packages for the terminated are very light, and far less than what was initially promised. In Beijing alone, more than 2,400 research and development jobs were cut.

No evidence has surfaced of actual violence either by or directed towards the terminated employees. Additionally, the Microsoft buyout of Nokia was anything but hostile, regardless of what the protesters claim.
