Rugged Kyocera Brigadier has sapphire glass display, dust and water resistance

Verizon has quietly launched two smartphones on its network, with both available to buy today. The LG G Vista is a previously-rumored 5.7-inch smartphone with a qHD resolution, while the Kyocera Brigadier is a ruggedized smartphone with a 4.5-inch 720p display, a screen which is unusually protected by a front panel made from sapphire glass.

The LG G Vista has a quad-core 1.2GHz processor with 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage, reports Android Police. On the back is an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, along with a 1.3-megapixel front-facing version, while connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, and access to Verizon's LTE network. The Android 4.4.2 device also has a 3,200mAh battery said to last for up to 15 hours of usage, and its onboard software includes LG's own apps, and the Knock Code security system.

Aside from a smaller, higher-resolution display, the Kyocera Brigadier uses a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 400 processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. Running on Android KitKat, it includes a 3,100mAh battery which can be charged wirelessly, rear 8-megapixel and front 2-megapixel cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and Miracast connectivity, and is also LTE enabled.

While it has sapphire protection on the front, dubbed the Kyocera Sapphire Shield display, the Brigadier is hard-wearing in other ways. Ruggedized to military-spec 810G standards, it is resistant to dust, shock, vibration, temperature extremes, blowing rain, low pressures, solar radiation, salt fog, humidity, and immersion. It is also IP68 dust-proof, and can survive at a depth of up to 6 feet for up to half an hour. Also playing into its potential for use in hazardous environments, the Brigadier includes dual front speakers capable of volumes reaching 100 decibels.

Both the LG G Vista and the Kyocera Brigadier are being sold for $100 on a two-year commitment, for $20 per month under Verizon Edge, and for $400 off-contract.
