Sky Mobile wireless service launches in US on Sprint frequencies

updated 12:25 pm EDT, Thu July 31, 2014

Monthly carrier promises 'unlimited' data, cheaper plans for users

Sky Communications has launched a new wireless provider, Sky Mobile, across the US. The new carrier offers several options for mobile users, with basic users still being able to purchase flip phones, while smartphone users are able to choose from devices from Apple, LG, Samsung, and Kyocera.

Plans begin at $15 per month for 500 minutes of talk, to $45 for unlimited text and talk. Customers are able to choose the amount of data they want to use on a monthly basis, from 100MB per month for $5 to "unlimited" for $30. Data overages cost0 10 cents per megabyte. Phone prices range from $35 to $500. As an example of pricing, the iPhone 4S retails at the carrier for $275, and the Galaxy S4 sells for $499.

Paradoxically, the company says that the "acceptable usage standard" for "unlimited" data is 3GB per month for an individual, and 10GB for shared -- the "unlimited" plan also lists a 10-cent overage charge per MB. Electronista has reached out to Sky Mobile for comment on its definition of "unlimited" and what happens when a user exceeds the "acceptable usage standard."

The network uses Sprint-compatible phones, meaning that it operates on the 1900MHz band for CDMA and EVDO devices, with 1.9Ghz and 800MHz for 4G LTE.
