Briefly: Yelp adds video, Facebook forces Messenger for iOS

Yelp iOS app adds ability to create up to 12-second video clips

Branching out in its ability to offer reviews of local businesses, Yelp has now updated its iOS app to version 8.1, which gives users the option to create a shortly 3-12 second-long video message alongside or in place of written reviews, comments or images. The video option is the only significant new feature, alongside the usual bug fixes and tweaks, and "lives" alongside the photo option -- which can now be toggled between photos and videos. Users can find existing video reviews alongside photos in both the app and on the company's website.

Facebook to strip chatting out of main app, force users to install Messenger

Social network Facebook has announced that it will remove the ability to use its primary iOS app for messaging beginning later this week, and instead force users to install and use the Facebook Messenger app for chatting on the network on iOS devices. The company says it wants to "avoid the confusion of having separate Facebook mobile messaging experiences" by consolidating all chatting and Facebook calling into a separate app. It noted that "more than 200 million people each month" use the mobile Messages app -- or about a fifth of its users -- and claims that using Messenger rather than the main FB app is about 20 percent faster.

The main Facebook app will still have a "Messages" tab, but will open the Messenger app (if installed) when people use it, or suggest users install it. The "chat heads" feature that allowed users to interact with Facebook and send and receive messages at the same time will apparently be removed from the main app, a tactic sure to anger some users already feeling abused by Facebook's recent privacy violations and tendency to offer false "endorsements" from users' friends they did not actually make.

Yet more proof that Facebook and Zuck (the schnook) are just evil!!! and why I closed my Facebook account a long time ago. May I suggest "you" do the same.

It is a befuddling move, that's for sure. Someone elsewhere likened it to the short-lived Netflix split. I'm beginning to think FB is little more than one big experiment to see how much garbage users will put up with just to keep in touch with friends and family.
