Amazon opens 3D printing store with curated list of customizable items

Personalized 3D-printed models, accessories offered by Amazon

Amazon has become the latest retailer to offer sales of 3D printed objects. Just as with Hasbro, the Amazon 3D Printing Store is making more than "200 unique print-on-demand products" available to buy and created through manufacturing partners, and though it is a curated collection of items instead of a user-designed object printing service, it still provides customers the chance to customize some of their purchases before printing.

Customers buying printed items will be able to use a preview pane to view the object in 3D, with the option to personalize it with a name or other small changes. The range of items includes jewelry, toys, fashion accessories, and trinkets in a variety of materials, including plastic and metal, with varying levels of customization. The main example has to be the bobble heads and dolls, where the user can alter the hairstyle, facial features, clothing, and colors before completing the print, at a cost of $30.

The option to sell 3D Printed items isn't new, as Shapeways and others have done so for some time. Even though Staples is also providing a 3D printing service, it is more likely the high-traffic Amazon and the user-friendly and limited collection of items will be many people's first taste of 3D printed items.

Though it does not currently offer the option to print user-submitted objects, Amazon has opened itself up to submissions from designers wanting to sell their own items through the service.
