Razer works with WeChat for messenger integration on $100 Nabu

Razer Nabu slated for launch in US in next two months

Game peripherals manufacturer Razer is adding support for WeChat to its Nabu smartband, while also confirming the device is shipping soon. The two companies are apparently working together on ways to use the Nabu, including exchanging contacts by shaking hands and comparing fitness statistics with friends using WeChat, as well as allowing the wearable device to display notifications from the messaging service.

While Razer has ultimately avoided a release date for the device, CEO Min-Ling Tan told Recode it should ship in the United States within the next two months, priced at $100. "We see this as definitely a mainstream product, that's why we've made it an open platform (and) priced it competitively," said Tan. A launch in China, a market where WeChat is heavily used, is touted for sometime in the fourth quarter.

The Nabu combines a fitness tracker with the functionality of a smartwatch, and will work with both iOS and Android devices using a companion app. Notably, the device has two displays, with the smaller outer screen able to provide a basic notification, and the larger and more private display on the inside of the wrist showing more detail. A recent request for beta testers reportedly collected over 250,000 applications, despite the program being limited to just 500 devices.
