Google Play Music All Access pass offered to US Chromecast owners

updated 01:02 pm EDT, Thu July 24, 2014

One-year anniversary of Chromecast celebrated with extended music trial

Google is providing owners of the Chromecast streaming dongle in the United States free access to Google Play Music All Access for 90 days. An extension of an offer which has already been made available in other Chromecast countries for some time, it is being made available to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Chromecast's launch.

Chromecast owners will have to redeem the offer by going to the Chromecast Offers page, and have until September 30th to start the three-months, though it will only apply to new All Access subscribers. At the end of the three months, the service will switch to the $9.99 monthly subscription unless stopped.

Google claims users have pressed the "Cast" button in apps to send content to the Chromecast more than 400 million times over the year, and though the company is loathe to state how many have been sold, it does point out the Chromecast is being sold in 30,000 stores across 20 countries. A research firm estimates Google sold around 3.8 million Chromecasts over the year.

Owners are likely to see a number of changes to the Chromecast over the coming months. In recent weeks, Google rolled out a change enabling screen casting in Android devices, while future updates include the ability to cast to devices without joining the same network, and customizing the standby photo feed.
