Procreate 2.1 adds ColorDrop, reference layers, other new features

updated 04:11 pm EDT, Wed July 23, 2014

More color selection options

Savage Interactive has released v2.1 of Procreate, its professional-level illustration app for the iPad. The update is a major one, adding a number of new features, most significantly ColorDrop. Users can now simply drag and drop a color to a location to fill; before dropping, continuing to hold will bring up fill threshold controls.

A related item is reference layers, particularly important for comics. Through setting a reference layer, and selecting another, ColorDrop can fill into the selected layer based on reference content. Color is in fact a major theme of v2.1, with some other additions including a new Color Wheel -- for quick selection -- and the ability to pick an exact color value. It's now easier to create and delete swatches, including swatch palettes, which can be organized, imported, and exported.

Miscellaneous changes include updated stylus SDKs, including one for FiftyThree's Pencil; the ability to create a new canvas from Photos; and many new language localizations, among them Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portugese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Chinese (simple or traditional). Procreate costs $6 and requires iOS 7.
