Amazon bolsters small Prime Music catalog with thousands of tracks

updated 12:02 pm EDT, Wed July 23, 2014

Extra music added on top of existing million-track Amazon Prime Music collection

Amazon is attempting to improve the selection of music available on its Prime Music service, to make it more appealing to Prime subscribers. The retailer has announced it has added "hundreds of thousands of songs" to the Prime Music catalog, as well as more curated playlists to the service, though it appears users wanting more modern music may be disappointed.

The new additions to the collection include existing Prime artists as well as some new acts, reports TechCrunch. Noted artists in the announcement include Shakira, Deadmau5, Skrillex, and DJ Snake & Lil Jon, along with older groups including Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Neil Young, and Ella Fitzgerald.

It is likely that existing users will welcome the extra song choice to the service, as Amazon claimed it had "over a million songs" on Prime Music at launch. Despite being an additional service to the existing Prime subscription package, the music catalog is small when compared to its competitors, with Spotify offering its users over 20 million tracks to choose from. The small size allegedly stems from a combination of Amazon licensing older and popular songs for the service to save money, and is said to still be in talks with major record labels to further bolster the library.
