Nitero, Samsung Foundries deliver first Wi-Gig mobile chipset samples

NT4600 chipset in partners' hands for testing, evaluation; 2015 ship date

Chip manufacturer Nitero, in conjunction with the Samsung Foundry, has announced the first Wi-Gig chipset for mobile. The NT4600 is the an 802.11ad chipset, based on 28nm HKMG LPP technology. Nitero is currently demonstrating the NT4600 to select partners and customers, and will start production shipments in 2015.

The WiGig specification enables high-performance wireless data, display and audio applications that supplement the capabilities of previous wireless LAN devices. WiGig devices deliver data transfer rates up to 7Gbit per second, about as fast as an eight-antenna 802.11ac transmission, and nearly 50 times faster than the highest 802.11n rate, while maintaining compatibility with existing Wi-Fi devices.

The company claims that the new platform is 10x more power-efficient than 802.11ad solutions designed for the PC, making it ideal for mobile. Nitero's NT4600 supports low-latency 4K display and peer-to-peer wireless connectivity at USB 3.0 data rates. The NT4600 also supports transmit and receive beamforming for speed enhancement.

The chipset features peer-to-peer wireless connectivity, using 16-QAM modulation at up to 4.6 Gbps. It uses the PCI Express host interface, and already has Android driver support.
