Amazon is said to be preparing to launch an Android app for Amazon Instant Video for non-Kindle Fire tablets. An executive allegedly confirmed the long-awaited app for normal Android devices is "imminent" to a report, a move which would finally bring the video streaming service in line with competitors, such as Netflix, in providing a cross-platform video streaming experience.

According to PC Advisor, Amazon Instant Video marketing director Russell Morris confirmed the app's existence and expected near-future launch, but he did not specify if the app would work with both smartphones and tablets.

While Amazon has a number of apps which work on Android, including apps for Kindle and Cloud Player, it has been slow to offer something similar for its video services, possibly as an attempt to coax tablet buyers to pick up a Kindle Fire HDX. While Morris did not explain why the app is now being made, it is possible that Amazon is feeling pressure from competitors providing their service across multiple devices, including iOS, Android, and Game Consoles, and so must offer an Android app to keep up.

Morris also confirmed the retailer was hard at work creating 4K video content for the service. He reiterated plans for all 2014 full original series to be filmed at the resolution, with two expected to launch this year, and two more in the first quarter of 2015.
