Amazon Kindle Unlimited subscription e-books service leaks in testing

updated 02:16 pm EDT, Wed July 16, 2014

Cached pages detail Kindle Unlimited service with over 600,000 books

Amazon is allegedly testing an e-book subscription service the retailer could offer to Kindle customers sometime in the future. Effectively operating in a similar way to Netflix for video or Spotify for music, Kindle Unlimited will apparently provide "unlimited access to over 600,000 titles and thousands of audiobooks" at a cost of $10 per month.

The cached pages unearthed by GigaOM shows the service as providing quite a few popular franchises, including the Lord of the Rings, the Hunger Games, and the Harry Potter series. One still-live page called KU Test, presumably "Kindle Unlimited Test," has 628,619 books available to download, through earlier the page listed over 638,000 titles. A total of 7,351 audiobooks under "Whispersync for Voice" also allegedly forms part of the usage list.

Despite the apparent size of the collection, it doesn't appear that any of the five largest publishers are included in the service. It is likely that Amazon is attempting to get more favorable terms from publishers before it includes these titles, though for some publishers, such as Hachette, it may take some time to come around to the service.

Amazon has a number of competitors in this area. Both Scribd and Oyster offer e-books at a similar monthly cost, and Amazon itself does offer Prime subscribers access to its Kindle Lending Library as part of the annual fee, though Kindle Unlimited will be more attractive to non-Prime users who want more choice.
