Upgraded Raspberry Pi adds more USB ports, microSD slot

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has launched an upgraded version of its popular Raspberry Pi micro computer. The Raspberry Pi Model B+ is similar to the original credit card-sized PC in many respects, but with quite a few updates to modernize and improve the device, as well as making it even more useful for various electronics-based projects and in education.

The Model B+ uses the same BCM2835 application processor as its predecessor, as well as 512MB of RAM, Ethernet connection, HDMI-output, and Micro USB power. The new version increases the USB 2.0 port count from two to four, with improvements made to its hot-plugging and overcurrent behavior. The SD card slot used for storage has been replaced by a microSD version, allowing for a flush fit without the memory card sticking out.

The GPIO header, used for electronics work, has increased from 26 pins to 40, the power consumption has dropped by between 0.5W and 1W, and the audio circuit now includes a "dedicated low-noise power supply." The physical placement of components have also been refined, with all major connections pointing out of just two edges, though this now means it will not fit existing Model B cases.

The Foundation is on sale today, with the price of the Model B+ kept to the same $35 as the original Model B.
