Apple A8 processor may surpass 2GHz but remain dual-core, report says

updated 11:31 am EDT, Fri July 11, 2014

Specs would be somewhat out-of-step with recent competitors

For its A8 processor, Apple is planning to boost clock speeds to 2GHz or higher, but stick to just two cores, says Chinese site cnBeta. The A7 used in the iPhone 5s, iPad Air, and Retina iPad mini is a dual-core 1.3GHz chip. On top of the speed boost, the A8 is expected to upgrade from 28nm manufacturing to 20nm.

Some rumors have suggested that Apple might make the jump to a quad-core processor in 2014. Many rival Android and Windows Phone devices do use quad-core chips; the A7, though, sports an optimized 64-bit architecture, which may reduce the incentive to add more cores. In many cases, iOS apps still aren't fully leveraging 64-bit support.

The A8 should appear in new iPhones and iPads due this fall.

Quad core design doesn't really make sense in the ARM world because most devices don't do a lot of multitasking. Right now, the only thing quad cores allows you to do is claim a speed boost because you can do things four times at once. In the real world, it doesn't make much difference.

Concentrating on reducing chip size and ramping up speed makes a lot more sense.
