TSMC begins shipping A-series processors for Apple

updated 10:24 am EDT, Thu July 10, 2014

Samsung, TSMC splitting orders

TSMC has begun shipping Apple A-series processors out for assembly, according to the Wall Street Journal. Production is said to have begun on 20nm fabrication lines in the first quarter, but shipments have only started happening more recently. Despite TSMC's involvement, the firm is expected to split orders with Samsung, which has traditionally produced every A-series chip.

One source adds that TSMC has "assigned a large team to support Apple as you know this client is very picky." It's not specified what processors the company is producing, but given the timing they're presumably A8 chips for this fall's iPhones and iPads. It's not certain what sort of chip the iWatch will use.

For a long time now reports have suggested that TSMC would either join or replace Samsung in the production of Apple processors. Apple and Samsung have become antagonistic in recent years, given lawsuits over the latter's Android devices, which are also the main competition for products like the iPhone. In the past few months though, the companies have been working towards scaling back their legal disputes.
