Google updates Camera app with Android Wear shutter trigger

updated 05:53 am EDT, Thu July 10, 2014

Android Wear devices can take photos using paired smartphone camera

Google has updated its Camera app, allowing it to work in tandem with a smartwatch running Android Wear. Version 2.3 of the app, slowly rolling out on Google Play, adds the ability for Android Wear devices to remotely control the camera app's shutter function, though the update also introduces a few other new additions to the software at the same time.

The linked smartwatch will show a new card for the new camera controls, reports Android police, with the card appearing when the camera app is loaded. The remote controls only extend to the shutter, which automatically has a three-second timer before taking the photograph, and while it does show the results of the shot on the smartwatch display, it will not act as a remote viewfinder.

The app includes a updated panoramic photograph interface, providing larger dots and a simpler visual interface when lining up multiple photographs. Also added is an in-app help interface, keeping users within the app instead of redirecting them to the support website.
