Adidas focuses on training with official unveiling of Fit Smart band

Wearable wants to help users establish a routine rather than count steps

Adidas keyed the public in on the official release of the Fit Smart wearable today during the Wearable Technologies Conference 2014 in San Francisco. The band was initially reported on in June, after FCC and retailer listings revealed that the athletics company planned to release an entry into the growing wearable market.

Some of the information on the Fit Smart had been already known since the June leak. The design remains the same, utilizing an LED dot display and silicon strap. The LEDs on the device change colors between blue, green, red and yellow based on the intensity of the workout. Fit Smart also uses vibration and other, more visual prompts to communicate with the user.

"We are always working closely with athletes to understand their needs and bring meaningful performance innovation that helps them be their best," said Adidas General Manager of Digital Sports Paul Gaudio. "Fit Smart is the next step in making elite level sports science and wearable technology available to everyday athletes and people who are just looking to look and feel better."

Adidas's Fit Smart aims to be different than other fitness devices on the market, as it acts in a greater capacity than simply tracking steps. The purpose of the wearable is training and promoting an active lifestyle. The band utilizes a heart monitor on the back, pulling heart rate data with contact against the arm. Gaudio adds that the Fit Smart works on a personal level with training plans and weekly goals best suited for the individual.

Fit Smart stores up to 10 hours of workout data, which it uses in conjunction with the miCoach app on a mobile device via Bluetooth Low Energy. Within the app, users can tweak the settings and select from hundreds of free training plans created with Exos. The data from the wearable helps to define what sort of training a user can handle, helping to build a habit out of working out rather than focusing on number of steps taken in a day or measuring the effectiveness of sleep.

The Fit Smart will appear on the market in late August with a retail price of $199. Adidas says that two sizes are being made, with models coming in translucent or black materials. Fit Smart is set to premiere exclusively at Best Buy for the first few weeks before the band is available at the Adidas stores and other retailers.
