Dell, Samsung-backed 'Internet of Things' standards group emerges

updated 09:21 am EDT, Tue July 8, 2014

Open Interconnect Consortium fourth major IoT protocol to pop up

Possibly complicating the nascent "Internet of Things" market, chipmakers Intel, Broadcom, and Atmel along with Samsung and Dell have partnered on the Open Interconnect Consortium -- an organization intended to generate yet another standard for home automation gadgetry. The initiative joins efforts from Apple, Google and Qualcomm to try and consolidate the market under one banner.

In the market are Apple's HomeKit, Google's Nest ecosystem, the 50-company AllSeen Alliance, and now the Open Interconnect Consortium. General Manager Doug Fisher of Intel's Software and Services Group said that the initiative wasn't intended to sow consumer confusion, claiming that "we're not out to create that. We just think the industry has spoken and there's this approach that's needed. We're certainly welcoming others to participate."

The new group claims a main focus of the effort is security and other issues that it believes aren't being addressed by other efforts. The intention is to deliver a standard, an open-source implementation, and a program to certify developers and hardware manufacturers to ensure full compliance with the standard. No detail on how the group plans to implement the roadmap is available.

"The rise and ultimate success of the Internet of Things depends on the ability for devices and systems to securely and reliably interconnect and share information," Fisher added. "This requires common frameworks, based on truly open, industry standards. Our goal in founding this new consortium is to solve the challenge of interoperable connectivity for the Internet of Things without tying the ecosystem to one company's solution."

First efforts from the group will be seen in home automation and small office control markets. The group assumes more manufacturers and companies will join the effort in coming months.
