BlackBerry justifies Passport display as the 'IMAX of productivity'

Large square BlackBerry Passport display touted as useful for business

BlackBerry is attempting to justify the square display used in the Passport, a smartphone it recently revealed. In a blog post, the smartphone manufacturer claims the Passport's 4.5-inch square and high-resolution screen provides the same viewing space as a normal 5-inch smartphone display, but provides a "better viewing experience" because of the device's width.

The post explains that the optimal number of characters on a line in a book is 66 characters, according to "academic typology." While the typical smartphone will show 40 characters, the BlackBerry Passport will accommodate 60 characters, though this odd comparison doesn't take into account things like font size and the font itself. Even so, the company claims the screen makes it an ideal device for web browsing and e-books without worrying about portrait or landscape modes.

In another odd comparison, BlackBerry looks at the IMAX screen compared to regular cinema screens, with IMAX theaters showing normal movie trailers in the 16:9 aspect ratio before switching to its own dimensions. "The Passport is like the IMAX of productivity," the blog post proclaims.

The post goes on to explain how the screen could be useful for architects, mortgage brokers, healthcare, finance, and writers. BlackBerry is supposedly trying to recapture the enterprise market, after companies abandoned the platform for iOS and Android, so a device with a large work-friendly display could be attractive to this market. It remains to be seen if it will be a success, with BlackBerry set to release the Passport in the fall.
