Vodafone WorldTraveller roaming offers allowance usage abroad

updated 04:58 pm EDT, Mon July 7, 2014

Nine non-EU countries included in new Vodafone roaming scheme

British carrier Vodafone has launched a new add-on for its customers, allowing them to use their allowances abroad. Similar to an offer by rival carrier Three, Vodafone WorldTraveller lets Pay Monthly subscribers roam in a number of countries and use any remaining monthly data, text, or voice minute balance as if they're still located in the United Kingdom.

The new scheme is usable in the United States, India, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, Egypt, Ghana, Qatar, and South Africa, reports Pocket-Lint, though the scheme will cost customers £5 for each day their phone is used in the country if they have opted into the scheme. Customers also have the option of not opting into WorldTraveller and continuing to pay existing roaming charges when visiting these countries, a system which could be cheaper for the user depending on their daily usage.

Travelers in Europe will continue to be offered the existing EuroTraveller scheme, which provides a similar service but at £2 per day until August 31st, when it changes to a £3 per day charge. In both instances, customers have to enable the service by dialing 5555 from their mobile phone for activation.

The choice to charge a daily fee for WorldTraveller and EuroTraveller is odd, as Three offers its similar Feel At Home service at no charge. The EuroTraveller scheme, which has been in operation since 2011, may also be seen as an unattractive offer to light users, as the European Commission recently reduced the maximum call, text, and data charges for European roaming.
