Shield Tablet spotted as name for Nvidia gaming handheld follow-up

Nvidia is preparing to launch another device in its Shield product line, with the device likely to take a different form from the original. New listings for a device have appeared at the Global Certification Forum directly mentioning a Shield Tablet, suggesting that, not only will it have LTE connectivity, but it could also change shape from a controller with a clamshell screen to a more conventional tablet.

The posting on Twitter pointing to the filing, spotted by The Verge, directly describes the device as a "Notebook/Tablet," which may hint at some form of convertibility. It is possible that this could be a follow-up to the Tegra Note 7, a standard tablet that Nvidia launched in late 2013 which was billed as a gaming-friendly device.

Specifications for the Shield Tablet are largely unknown, though shortly after the launch of the Tegra Note 7, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang hinted at a second-generation of the device using an unannounced Tegra chip. Since that time, it has updated the Tegra Note 7 with the i500 LTE Modem, and launched the Tegra K1 mobile processor with a 192-core GPU and 32-bit and 64-bit variants.
