Second developer kit for Oculus Rift on the way to developers

Developers who pre-ordered the second version of the Oculus Rift developer kit will soon start to receive their orders. The Facebook-owned company is advising that it will be shipping approximately 10,000 units of Developer Kit 2 (DK2) from the factory, with the first batches expected to start reaching developers from July 14th onwards.

Oculus VR has received over 45,000 pre-orders for the second-generation virtual reality headset since the updated headset became available in March, reports TechCrunch, including over 12,000 in the first 36 hours after launch. While 10,000 units represents less than a quarter of these orders, only half of this figure is expected to pass through the distribution center and dispatched to customers within the month.

The Oculus Rift DK2 upgrades its main display to an OLED panel, giving a resolution of 960x1080 per eye, a refresh rate of up to 75Hz, with a persistence as low as 2ms, all to avoid motion blur and judder issues from the original design. Offering a 100-degree field of view, the headset connects to a host device using a 10-foot detachable cable with HDMI 1.4b and USB 2.0 connections. The new version also includes a latency testing system, as well as an external camera tracking infrared LEDs, enabling wearers to raise their heads, duck, or look around a wall in games.
