Yahoo winds down 'less popular' services including Xobni, Shine

updated 08:13 pm EDT, Wed July 2, 2014

A handful of services are ending so Yahoo can focus on its four core areas

Yahoo announced today that it will be consolidating and shutting down a number of services to better fit with its mission statement. The company will shutter several services in the near future, and either integrate some of those features into other software or see the services' existence ended altogether. Shutting the little-used services down allows Yahoo to focus on the company's four core areas.

Six services are seeing their usefulness come to an end anywhere from today to July 31. The company believes that it should focus on its mission of "making the world's daily habits more inspiring and entertaining." Core areas for Yahoo now consist of communications, digital magazines, search and video. Senior Vice President of the Cloud Platform Jay Rossiter took to Yahoo's Tumblr to outline the changes.

"We took a hard look at our products and have shut down some of the less popular ones and integrated widely-loved features from others into core Yahoo experiences," said Rossiter. "We first announced these changes in March and April 2013, and remain committed to communicating product updates that affect our users now and in the future."

As of today, People Search is closing down. Previously, Yahoo users could use the search directory specifically to seek out people. However, Yahoo's search engine now allows for the search of people, among other items, giving users a central place to find information.

In 2013, Yahoo acquired Xobni, a company that made software for email clients like Outlook and free mail services such as Gmail. At the time of the acquisition, Yahoo stated that some software and a number of apps would stop functioning. However, the company would later take all Xobni items offline in 2014. Rossiter reminded users that and Smartr products' functionality ends on July 2. All Xobni Cloud data will be erased on August 20. Many of the functions of Xobni products are now found in Yahoo Mail.

Yahoo Toolbar for Chrome is scheduled for removal from the Chrome web store in a move to comply with Google's change in the treatment of extensions. Instead, the company asks that people migrate to the Yahoo extension that is now available. Yahoo Toolbar is coming down on July 22, with Internet Explorer and Firebox versions remaining functional.

Rather than pull away from the focus on the recent addition of digital magazines, Yahoo Shine will wind down on July 31. Yahoo says that the magazines offer deeper information on the topics covered by the women's lifestyle content service. Users of Shine can turn to Yahoo Beauty and Yahoo Travel now, with a promise to look forward to more content.

Two other services, Yahoo Voices and Yahoo Contributor Network, will also reach the end of their lives in the coming months. Voices shuts down at the end of July, while the contributor network sees its curtain close in August.

The post from Rossiter also outlines some services that Yahoo shut down earlier in the year. These include the Newlook service, the ability to generate research reports on Yahoo Finance and Even though bookmarks closed in May, Yahoo Toolbar contains some of the same functionality.

so, basically Yahoo has decided to close itself? because all the services it provides are way into the "less popular" category..
