Miniature version of Galaxy S5 to retain heart rate monitor from original

[Updated with confirmation] Samsung could launch the mini version of the Galaxy S5 next month, potentially at the same time as entry-level devices launched earlier today, according to a report. The rumored Galaxy S5 mini will allegedly go on sale in markets worldwide in mid-July, with the launch apparently falling in line with the initial shipments of the Galaxy S4 mini from last year.

Sources of SamMobile made the launch date claim, as well as suggesting it will keep some of the more impressive features of the flagship model. These features include the fingerprint scanner, the rear-mounted heart rate sensor, and the same IP67 water and dust resistance found in the full-size version.

It is believed the Galaxy S5 mini will have a 4.5-inch 720p display, powered by an unannounced Exynos 3 Quad processor clocked at 1.4GHz. Using 1.5GB of RAM, the Galaxy S5 mini will have a rear 8-megapixel camera, a front-facing 2.1-megapixel version, connectivity over LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, NFC, and infrared, and its Android 4.4.2 implementation will use TouchWiz UX with the Ultra Power Saving Mode, the Private Mode, and a child-friendly Kids Mode.

Update: Samsung has now confirmed the Galaxy S5 mini. The specifications list provided by Samsung matches that of the latest rumor above, except that it also includes a 2,100mAh battery. It will be shipping in Russia in early July, with global expansion shortly after, in a choice of four colors: Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue, and Copper Gold.
