Google announces closure of Orkut at end of September

updated 12:54 pm EDT, Mon June 30, 2014

Early Google social network shuttering, focus shifts to YouTube, Google+

Google is warning it will be shutting down its early social network, Orkut. Closing after ten years, the service will officially stop operating on September 30th of this year, with the search company planning to focus its "energy and resources" on its other social efforts, including Google+, YouTube, and blogging platform Blogger, to make them "as amazing as possible for everyone who uses them."

Originally created as a "20 percent" project, engineering director Paulo Golgher advises the company is taking the action "because the growth of these communities [other social services Google operates] has outpaced Orkut's growth." Golgher writes that the team hopes "people will find other online communities to spark more conversations and build even more connections for the next decade and beyond."

It is assured that current Orkut users will see no impact until the shutdown date, in order to "give the community time to manage the transition," though Google has stopped new accounts from being created altogether. Users will be able to export their profiles, community posts, and photographs using Google Takeout until September 2016. Orkut communities will continue to exist as an archive from September 30th, though users not wishing for their name or posts to be included can remove Orkut permanently from their Google account.
