Head of Android Engineering at Google refutes claims of Nexus death

Google will continue to offer Nexus devices for the foreseeable future, the head of Android Engineering has confirmed. Putting to rest rumors of the Nexus line's demise, Dave Burke advised it will not be replaced by the rumored Android Silver nor the recently-announced Android One program, with new Nexus devices to be expected when the next version of Android is officially released.

"People have been commenting about Nexus because there is something else and they think that means the end of Nexus. That is the totally wrong conclusion to make," Burke said to Read Write. Elaborating further, Burke explained that Google still has two teams working simultaneously on Android and Nexus devices, with the teams being codependent. "There is no way you can build the open source code without the phone or tablet or whatever you are building," said Burke, adding "You can't build a platform in the abstract, you have to build a device (or devices.)"

The Android One initiative aims to have Google working with device and component producers to create low-cost Android smartphones and tablets for the emerging market. While the devices will run stock Android, just like Nexus products, Android One will aim to use lower-specification components in order to achieve a lower price point, starting with a sub-$100 dual-core smartphone with a 4.5-inch display heading to India before the end of the fall.

Burke declined to discuss Android Silver, a similar plan that echoes the current Google Play device program. Android Silver is believed to involve third-party manufacturers producing high-end devices that also run on stock Android, with Google said to be spending as much as $1 billion as incentives to manufacturers for their participation.
