Asus reportedly preparing Android Wear smartwatch launch for September

updated 01:44 pm EDT, Fri June 27, 2014

Budget Android Wear device from Asus could cost as little as $99

Asus will launch its smartwatch at a far lower price than other Android Wear devices, according to a report. The Taiwanese computer producer is said to be looking to charge at most $149 for its wearable device, and potentially as low as $99, heavily undercutting both the Samsung Gear Live and the LG G Watch, and is likely to be far below the Moto 360 when it ships.

Sources of TechCrunch claim the company is planning a launch sometime in September this year, with the claim that Asus did not want to "rush" its efforts. Not much detail about the device itself has been revealed, except that it will have an AMOLED display, with @evleaks claiming it is codenamed "Robin" and aims to be the "thinnest device in the category."

Given the potential launch timing, it is possible for both LG and Samsung's smartwatches to receive discounts before Asus ships its watch. It is also likely that other Android Wear devices will hit the market around the same time, as other manufacturers scramble to join the platform.
