LG will work with Google to produce Project Tango device by 2015

updated 02:03 pm EDT, Thu June 26, 2014

Mobile device from LG will include 3D-sensing technology from Google ATAP

Project Tango, Google's 3D-sensing technology from Google's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) skunkworks, could be in consumer's hands by next year. LG will be partnering with Google on a commercial device for release in 2015, according to an announcement made at a Google I/O presentation, though it is unclear what form the mobile device will take.

Specifications of the future device were not discussed at the event, writes Slashgear. An earlier test was performed on a smartphone, while a development kit for Project Tango is being offered to developers, with the latter being the most likely candidate for LG's device. The development kit consists of a 7-inch tablet with an Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, Wi-Fi, LTE, Bluetooth LE, as well as the Project Tango camera and sensor array, and will apparently sell for $1,024 in limited quantities later this year, though LG's device is likely to be far cheaper.

The basic idea of Project Tango is to create a system where a mobile device can track its position in 3D accurately, with the cameras and depth sensors able to make a quarter of a million 3D measurements every second to build up a 3D model of the surrounding area. One demonstration at Google I/O involved the Unity game engine, with potential applications including augmented reality gaming, and mapping a house as part of a property sale.
