Developer program brings Unity to PlayStation Vita, PlayStation TV creators

Last week, Sony announced that it was bringing an official version of Unity optimized for its mobile platforms to developers. The "Unity for PlayStation Mobile" kit gives developers of games on smartphone and tablet platforms an easier way to bring their projects to the PlayStation Vita and upcoming PlayStation TV.

According to Sony, this official version of Unity allows developers to work more efficiently by removing a need for "extensive re-coding." Studios and developers that created programs for other mobile platforms, such as iOS and Android, can now port them to the Vita and PlayStation TV much more easily than before. The company thinks that by allowing the official Unity channel, a larger range of developers and projects can be brought to Sony's systems.

Sony says that the developers will also have an easier time creating new games that use features of the Vita. This includes use of the dual analog sticks and the touchpad on the back of the handheld.

Developers interested in the program need to register with Sony, and obtain a PlayStation Mobile Publisher License. The license must be purchased to be able to sell or test applications that have been developed with Unity. Currently, the building environment is Windows-based, requiring developers to use Unity tools in Windows 7 or Windows 8.

The "Unity for PlayStation Mobile" development tools are available in 32 countries and regions through the PlayStation Mobile Developer Program. Those interested in developing for Sony's mobile gaming platforms can head over to the developer portal for more information.
