MacUpdate Desktop 6 promises one-click app installs

updated 02:49 pm EDT, Wed June 25, 2014

Faster updates through new menu bar item

MacUpdate has released MacUpdate Desktop 6, an app intended to simplify installing and updating Mac software. The title relies on the company's own directory, but permits one-click installs, and regularly scans for updates to installed programs, which can be applied via Desktop or a new OS X menu bar item. Although the Mac App Store handles similar functions, MacUpdate notes that it also covers software not hosted there, such as Skype.

Views in Desktop show groups of installed programs and watch lists, and highlight items that need to be updated. The client is a free download, but in that form is limited to just five free updates per month, and removes watch lists. Full functionality requires paying $20 a year, though that does strip ads from MacUpdate's website and add email notifications.

Also the Mac App Store often is weeks behind the release of an update, whereas MacUpdate Desktop offers the update immediately.
