FreedomPop plans app-specific data plans, sponsored data allowances

Paid, sponsored cellular access for specific apps mulled by FreedomPop for Q3 launch

Sprint-based wireless provider FreedomPop could soon change the way it offers data allowances to its users, with an app-focused approach. A report claims the company is testing app-based data allowances, letting users pay for bandwidth for specific smartphone apps, on top of the current 500MB free cellular usage the carrier provides its customers each month.

TechCrunch claims the carrier is testing the service by offering an hour of unfettered Facebook access for $1, or $7 for an entire month. Access to the CNN app is also offered as a sponsored option in the trial, though this may change at launch. Sources state there will be at least three sponsored apps at launch, with options to pay for app data for the 50 most popular apps on the service. Options for unlimited voice calls or extra general data allowances will also be offered.

The mix between AT&T's Sponsored Data and an app-specific data plan could be beneficial to users, especially those having issues visualizing how much data 1GB really is. Such a scheme could also save users prone to data overage money, especially if they use relatively few apps.

It is believed the updated data offerings will go live in the third quarter.
