Chromebook Pixel purchasers free LTE data offers expiring early [U]

Offer for two or three years of LTE not being honored by Verizon

[Updated: Google now offering compensation to Pixel owners] Despite Google promising two years of 100MB free LTE data per month with the purchase of a Chromebook Pixel, a large percentage of users are finding that the offer is no longer being honored by Verizon. Users can still pay for data, but the free 100MB offer has seemingly expired, just over one year after the device launched, well short of launch offers.

Verizon is telling customers, who have complained about the issue since April, that regardless of confirmation of the offer, as far as it is concerned, the offer has expired. Users are being "escalated" even with proof of the multi-year offer as a bonus for purchasing the computer. Electronista contacted Verizon customer care about the issue, and we were told that the offer was only ever for one year, not two, and early purchasers of the computer are seeing their limited time offers expiring.

The matter is somewhat confused online. A press release, still online at Google's press portal, gives owners "100MB/month of mobile broadband service from Verizon Wireless, free, for three years." An old version of the Chromebook Pixel webpage clearly delineates two years of free service, as does our own coverage of the launch of the laptop. The current version of the page lists no such offer.

Update: Google is now offering customer affected by the reneged dea a $150 prepaid Visa card as compensation for the collapse of the arrangement. The move by the search and advertising giant suggests that the premature expiry of the original offer, which was promoted and sold by Google rather than Verizon, could have come about due to a perceived ineffectiveness in helping sell the Chromebook Pixel, which has not found noticeable success in the market.
