Briefly: Google Android music search, streaming reaches UK charts

updated 09:29 am EDT, Mon June 23, 2014

Google Search on Android will offer streaming app links on music searches

Google has updated its search app on Android, changing the way it handles music-related queries. Results for songs and artists will now load up a list of links to streaming services, letting the user play that artist's music from within the relevant installed smartphone app, such as Spotify, Rdio, and Google Play Music. Google is rolling the feature out to Android devices in the United States now, and hopes to expand it globally soon.

Music streaming apps to count towards UK singles chart

British music charts will start to take into account music played on streaming service, the Official Charts Company has revealed. The BBC reports music played on Spotify, Deezer, and others will be taken into account on UK's singles chart from July, though streaming will not have the same power over the chart as song purchases. Streams will equate to one percent of a song purchase, and in an effort to avoid avid music fans from taking advantage, only ten plays of a track per user per day will be counted, with each instance needed to be played for at least 30 seconds.
