Mozilla Chromecast-like Firefox OS streaming stick outed

updated 11:09 am EDT, Sat June 21, 2014

Twitter post shows device, little specific detail known

Mozilla is readying a prototype of a streaming platform, to help compete with the likes of Google's Chromecast. Confirming developer notes, the new device will run Mozilla's Firefox OS, adds screencasting to the Firefox browser, and even runs some Chromecast apps, in its current incarnation.

Gigaom claims to have been tracking the project for some time, which was outed by a Mozilla evangelist in a tweet. The device will be more open to content than the Chromecast is, and will expand beyond Android and iOS devices. The report claims that the device has an open boot loader, so it is possible that enterprising developers could use it to run other software than that provided by Mozilla.

A Mozilla spokesperson, when asked about the device and manufacturing, said that "Firefox OS is an open platform freely available for any company to build on top of without restriction. This means companies can experiment with different form factors that run Firefox OS."

No timetable for release, or pricing is known.
