Trademark hints at dedicated app store for Gear smartwatches, wearable devices

New trademark filings suggest Samsung may be launching an app store for its Gear wearable device collection in the future. A listing for the 'Gear Store' has surfaced in the United States Patent and Trademark Office, along with the back-up 'Samsung Gear Store' registration, seemingly showing the Korean manufacturer is looking to create a unified app store, one that may not stop with smartwatches.

The listings spotted by Ubergizmo were filed on June 16th, and cover a variety of wearable devices. Software for wearable computers, mobile phones, and computer peripherals are noted, along with what appear be mentions of other non-wearable hardware and accessories, including batteries and smartphone covers, as well as some domestic appliances. It is possible it will extend to Gear Glass, a head-mounted device similar to Google Glass which has surfaced in rumors a number of times.

The trademark is most likely for an app store in a similar vein to the Pebble smartwatch companion app, which provides watch faces and apps for loading onto the watch. Samsung released its Tizen software development kit in March, allowing developers to create apps for the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit, with the store possibly catering to both these Tizen apps and Android versions usable on the original Galaxy Gear.
