BlackBerry CEO confirms impending app launch still on schedule

BlackBerry is preparing to release the Windows Phone version of its BlackBerry Messenger app, one the company said it would release by the summer. The messaging client, joining the iOS and Android versions as well as BlackBerry OS devices, was advised by CEO John Chen as coming out on time, though he stopped short of providing a specific release date.

Part of comments made during the company's earnings release yesterday, BerryReview reports the company's BBM user base now sits at an estimated 160 million. Active users on the service total approximately 85 million, including 50 million on BlackBerry devices, with the active user count thought to rise to past 100 million once the Windows Phone app is released. By comparison, the Facebook-owned WhatsApp hit a total of 500 million active users in April, increasing by 50 million from figures reported two months prior.

It remains to be seen if BlackBerry will incorporate features it has included in other versions of BBM into the Windows Phone release. Months after the Android and iOS launches, BlackBerry added BBM Voice calling and BBM Channels to the app, features which may get left out from the Windows Phone version initially.
