BlackBerry Passport with square display slated for fall release

updated 05:16 pm EDT, Thu June 19, 2014

Wide BlackBerry Passport briefly demonstrated by CEO John Chen

BlackBerry will be shipping two devices this fall, including one device the manufacturer unveiled today during its quarterly financial results release. The BlackBerry Classic, previously shown as the BlackBerry Q20, will be joined by the BlackBerry Passport, a device formerly codenamed as "Windermere," though CEO John Chen avoided mentioning any major specifications for either device.

The BlackBerry Passport, caught on film by CrackBerry, is a squarer device than the typical fare offered by the company. The wide device has a large square screen with an equally-wide keyboard below, and though the size was not disclosed, it appeared to be a phablet-sized smartphone in Chen's hands. Rumors suggest it to have a 4.5-inch 1440x1440 display powered by a quad-core Snapdragon processor with 3GB of RAM, along with a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front camera, and a 3,450mAh battery.

The Classic has a 3.5-inch capacitive touch display and keyboard, in the usual curved body shape. While it has a touchscreen, it makes up for the screen size difference compared to the Passport by having physical function keys and a trackpad.
