Near-full manual control allowed in iOS 8 for third-party photo apps

Should bring iOS 8 up to par with Android, Windows Phone

Third-party photography apps should get near-total camera control with iOS 8, reports note. The firmware's new AVCaptureDevice APIs are said to let apps manually adjust focus, shutter speed, ISO levels, white balance, exposure compensation, and even several different forms of exposure bracketing. Of those, iOS 8's stock Camera app is only due to receive exposure compensation as an exclusive option.

The change should nevertheless bring iOS' camera functions up to par with the ones on higher-end Android and Windows phones. The iPhone 5s is often claimed to have one of the best cameras on a technical level, but its lack of manual controls can impede shooting.

The forthcoming iOS 8, to be released this fall, is also expected to natively support time-lapse photography. Plans to improve iOS photography may extend to the iPhone 6, which has been rumored as getting a camera with a wider aperture and optical or electronic image stabilization.

Misleading title. iOS8 brings full manual controls to 3rd party apps, there is nothing 'near' about it.
Also, iOS is an operating system which is installed on the phone's flash memory, it is not firmware.

"reports note"? What about the WWDC keynote? There's no rumor here!
