Google Auto Link rumored to launch at Google I/O as CarPlay rival

Connected car system said to use Android smartphone functions

Google is preparing to unveil its competitor to Apple's CarPlay at Google I/O next week, according to a report. Believed to be codenamed Google Auto Link, the system is said to be a "projected" system instead of an embedded system, namely that the car can connect to a mobile device and be controlled using media interfaces and displays already installed in vehicle.

Multiple sources of Automotive News claim the system has been constructed as part of Google's work with the Open Automotive Alliance, which counts in its membership Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai, and Nvidia. While the system will be demonstrated at Google I/O, before an expected launch in vehicles sometime this year, the company will not reveal which cars will be the first to use it.

In theory, Google Auto Link will let users access the majority of phone functions via the car's entertainment console. This could allow for Google Maps to appear on a main front screen for navigation, voice-controlled dialing and texting, and possibly the ability to change music tracks playing on the smartphone using standard media controls on the dashboard.
