Apple Store goes down ahead of rumored iMac refresh

Updated iMac processors, Retina displays touted

Apple has temporarily taken the online Apple Store offline for all customers, ahead of what is believed to be the launch of some upgraded hardware. The multilingual "We'll be back" front page note is likely to be a sign that new iMacs are inbound, with recent rumors suggesting a general processor speed increase of 100MHz for the desktop computers.

The 21.5-inch iMacs are thought to use recently-introduced Intel processors, including the 3GHz i5-4590S and the 3.2GHz i5-4790S. The larger 27-inch models are said to have 3.3GHz and 3.5GHz Core i5 processors, as well as an option for a 3.6GHz i7-4790. There is a possibility that the new iMacs will have Retina support, as well as faster Thunderbolt 2 ports.

    Well this is awkward:

21.5-inch iMac at 1.4GHz (dual core only, turbo up to 2.7 GHz) and 500 GB hard drive for $1099
21.5-inch iMac at 2.7GHz (quad core, turbo up to 3.2 GHz) and 1 TB hard drive for $1299

I would just spend the extra $200 and get an iMac that had at least double the performance and double the hard drive space...the $1099 version seems awkwardly limited given how closely priced it is to its bigger brother.

No update for the 27"? I was holding off until the update was announced.

You now have the choice of an i7 processor on the top 21.5" model, or was that available before?

Yes, the i7 processor was available as a CTO option before this announcement. It is the same 3.1GHz chip.
