Amazon Appstore heading to BlackBerry in fall operating system update

updated 09:31 am EDT, Wed June 18, 2014

Licensing deal brings 240,000 Amazon apps to BlackBerry 10 devices

Owners of BlackBerry smartphones will soon have more apps to choose from, thanks to a licensing arrangement with Amazon. BlackBerry OS version 10.3 will include the Amazon Appstore when it ships in the fall, with the deal giving users more than 240,000 Android apps to use, on top of those already offered through the company's own BlackBerry World store.

Aside from introducing a number of Android apps that BlackBerry World does not offer for download, BlackBerry is also changing the way other types of content are offered to users. The music and video sections of BlackBerry World will close on July 21st, with customers forced to use third-party services to acquire media in the future. Previously downloaded content will continue to be available after the closure through the app's MyWorld section.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, CEO John Chen advised that the company had little inclination to continue to build its BlackBerry World app ecosystem, instead working towards improving its enterprise software. "Given I want to financially turn around the company and focus on the enterprise space, this is perfect for us," advised Chen

A rumor in late November claimed BlackBerry was interested in including Google Play to BlackBerry devices to bolster its app selection, a move dismissed by the company. It has also provided developers with an Android emulation engine, allowing their Android apps to work directly on BlackBerry OS with little in the way of modification.
