Samsung in talks to buy voice tech firm Nuance

updated 03:04 pm EDT, Mon June 16, 2014

Could have ramifications for Apple's Siri platform

Voice recognition company Nuance is in talks about possibly selling itself to Samsung, says the Wall Street Journal. Discussions reportedly began this year, but other than that it's unknown whether the two sides are making progress or even if/when a takeover might happen. If it does, however, it could potentially have a significant impact on the high-tech world.

Nuance produces its own recognition software, but also supplies an API to developers, and has partnerships with companies including Apple and Amazon. The Apple link in particular is crucial since Nuance code undergirds Siri, the voice command system built into iOS. The legal and competitive animosity between Apple and Samsung could lead Apple to strip out Nuance technology, whether of its own will or because Samsung is no longer willing to license it.

In either scenario Apple would have to find a replacement, but rumors have hinted that the company's Boston Siri team is working on that very thing. Where possible, Apple has been increasingly cutting out third parties, for example bringing Maps development in-house with iOS 6.
