Google Now introduces 'inferred event' cards using Gmail messages

Increased Google Now, Gmail integration scans messages, suggests calendar appointments

Google is stepping up the integration of Google Now with other Google products, by starting to roll out another card for events and appointments to its roster. Set to hit smartphones over the next few weeks, "Inferred events" found in email conversations in a Gmail account will now appear in Google Now, with the service now giving the option to add the referenced event to the user's Google Calendar.

In a similar manner to how the Google mobile search app can provide details for car rentals, or how reminders for upcoming bills can appear in Google Now, the information is pulled from Gmail logs. While bills and car rental bookings can be easily detected in a formulaic e-mail template, the new card appears to be slightly more sophisticated than previously seen, with the images released by Android Police showing that it is parsing e-mail conversations to find potential events. One example given is a conversation about an upcoming visit to the beach, with the card showing not only the relevant e-mail quote, but also offering to add it to the calendar, or to ignore the event completely.

It is possible Google will introduce cards offering to perform actions on other Google services using a similar process in the future. Google Now users preferring not to receive such updates can disable them from the search app's settings menu.
