AT&T increases activation fee for two-year contracts to $40 per line

updated 10:15 am EDT, Fri June 13, 2014

Increase of $4 makes AT&T most expensive for line activation among major carriers

AT&T has increased the activation fee for new lines taken up by some of its customers. The June 8th increase, from the previous $36 per line to $40, applies to customers signing up for a new two-year commitment with the carrier, with the change in price making AT&T the most expensive carrier to activate a device on out of the four largest in the United States.

Spokesman Mark Siegel advised to FierceWireless the increase was down to "administrative and other costs associated with activating or upgrading a device," and that it only applied to two-year contracts. A statement from the company notes that customers using AT&T Next are not charged the activation fee at all.

The increase pushes AT&T above and beyond the other carriers in terms of the most expensive activation fee. Sprint charges $36 per line, while Verizon charges $35, but it did cull the fee as part of a promotion earlier this year, and also provides a credit after customers sign up for Verizon Edge.

T-Mobile CEO and long-time critic of AT&T John Legere took to Twitter to comment about the change. "Is this a joke, AT&T?" Legere asks, before exclaiming "Uncarrier removes fees and you do the opposite?! What happened to copying us?" T-Mobile does not charge a fee for customers signing up to its Simple Choice plans, but does still charge for activating on a classic plan or for activations in Puerto Rico.
