Forbes: Google Fit health platform planned for unveiling at Google I/O

updated 06:25 am EDT, Fri June 13, 2014

Google Fit to collect data from fitness trackers, health apps, smartwatches

Google could be following the lead of Samsung and Apple by creating its own healthcare platform, according to Forbes. The search company is said to be preparing to launch Google Fit, a service which will collect and combine data from fitness trackers, health-related apps, and potentially Android Wear devices, in order to expand the amount of data available for app developers to work with.

Report sources claim the service will aggregate data with open APIs to allow for data sharing, though it is unknown if it will form part of the next iteration of Android, use Android Wear, or will operate as a standalone app. Google will apparently launch the platform at the Google I/O developer conference later this month, and will be announcing partnerships with wearable device makers at the same time.

Google Fit sounds relatively similar to both of Apple and Samsung's health frameworks. Apple's Healthkit stores and manages fitness information and serves data through the Health app and a Medical ID for the lock screen, while Samsung offers the SAMI cloud storage for health data, and is experimenting with a Simband smartwatch with a modular sensor panel.
